Spotnote

Limitations

What Spotnote can't do.

Elements without a source location

Spotnote only points at elements written literally in your own source. For these, a click selects the nearest stamped ancestor, and the prompt says so:

  • Elements rendered by dependencies, such as a UI library's components. Spotnote stamps your source, not node_modules.
  • Injected HTML: dangerouslySetInnerHTML, v-html, {@html}.
  • DOM built by scripts: charts, maps, rich-text editors and other widgets.
  • Tags chosen at runtime: <component :is="…">, <svelte:element this={…}>.
  • Vue render functions (h(...)).

Platform

  • Vite only. Next.js and other non-Vite setups aren't supported.
  • Dev only. Nothing runs in builds, unless you turn on a staging build, nor under Vitest.
  • Notes are local. Saved in your browser, not shared with teammates, not tied to Git.

Notes and code changes

  • Edits that move an element's opening tag detach its note.
  • For repeated elements, sorting or filtering moves a note to another item, because the note is tied to a position.
